MiPschool 2008 - Feedback

Notes from roundtable feedback session in Schroecken (July 17, 2008; compiled by Patrick Subarsky and Francesca Scandurra).

Lecture Organization

 

-separation of abilities (need introduction to field)

-real introduction to basics for young students

-need basic introduction

-first two days to get the basics

-more background before presentations

-responses did not flow during the lecture

-some presentations difficult to understand

-terminology difficult

-lecture on coupling and membrane potential was very good

            -included beginner and expert

            -enjoyed Vilma’s style of presentation

-lecture of C. Hoppel was very good

-more questions



Topics of Interest

-don’t have oxygraph, therefore am unfamiliar with method

-mitochondrial targetting

-ROS

-advantages to different preparations of biological samples

-data analysis

-more basic info on mitochondria

-genetic information of mitochondria

-mitochondrial transport mechanisms

-standard protocols/methodologies lecture

-buffers for respiration (what, why)

-introduction to subject of lectures

-mitochondrial diseases

-more basic information, methodological introduction

-protocols (why use specific method or reagent)

-basic methodology

            -buffers

            -membrane potential

            -protocols on the web

            -hand-outs/accessible to students



Special Interest Groups - Focussed Sessions

-appreciate more special interest groups

-parallel focus groups with multiple times

-Special Interest Groups early, then more at end to cover new topics/flexibility in program development

-break-up into smaller groups (8-10 people)

-divide the body for special interest groups (heart, muscle, brain)



Poster Sessions

-poster sessions a very good idea

-large circulating poster session

-student presentation very good, maybe extend

-stressed with flash presentation but good experience

-interactive abstracts-links to articles



Information Resources

-prescribe reading

-isolation is good (no internet)

-interaction experience/contact is important for idea exchange

-bring reprints, .pdf files

-small library of basic textbooks

-internet access and printers for information access

-use MiP Society for web access



General Organization

-keep all participants together for basic reviews at the beginning of lectures

-open atmosphere is good for learning

-good atmosphere, excellent interactions

-more questions/interaction –need to ask questions

-felt separation from O2k course to Summer School

-keep flexibility in schedule

-expected a lot from the course

            -overlap to course/school is poor

            -small groups for better interaction

-good to know level of attendees during registration

-can’t have comprehensive course, but mayb split a bit

-perfect to have long sessions



General Comments

-everything was perfect

-did not expect so much

-informal atmosphere is good

-MiP Summer was very good

-thanks to all presenters

-pleasure to be here/open/fantastic tutors

-enjoyed atmosphere/contact with people

-relaxed atmosphere is good to foster confidence
