Abstract: Dr. Jaroslav Heyrovskj, of the Charles' University of Prague, published in 1922 his first paper on studies with a dropping mercury electrode. This led to the development of polarography, a basically new method of analysis, that eventually won him a Nobel Prize in 1959. However, the origins of polarography may be traced back to 1873 when Lippmann designed his capillary electrometer. • Keywords: Respirometry, History
