Nitric oxide synthase

Description

Nitric oxide synthase, NOS, catalyzes the production of nitric oxide (NOโ€ข), which is a reactive nitrogen species. There are four types of NOS: neuronal NOS (nNOS), endothelial NOS (eNOS), inducible NOS (iNOS) and mitochondrial NOS (mtNOS).

Abbreviation: NOS

mtNOS

The significance of mitochondrial nitric oxide synthase is debated. mtNOS presents two isoforms: a constitutive (c-mtNOS) and an inducible (i-mtNOS) isoform. In normal conditions, both isoforms contribute equally to the production of mitochondrial NOโ€ข. However, in an inflammatory process occurs an induction of mtNOS generating high amounts of NOโ€ข.
