Cyanide

Description

Potassium cyanide is a competitive inhibitor of cytochcrome c oxidase (CIV). Inhibition is reversed by pyruvate and high oxygen levels.

Caution: KCN is photosensitive, hygroscopic and very toxic! Prepare the solution fresh everyday!


Preparation of 1 M stock solution (dissolved H2O):

1) weigh 13 mg of Potassium cyanide
2) dissolve in 0.2 ml H2O
3) the pH of the solution may be very alkaline - adjust with HCl
